The Importance of Feeling Connected at Work

  • How many of you feel disconnected from your work culture? Why do you think this is?

  • How many of you feel alone at work and have you stopped to wonder how you can fix this?

  • Alternatively - how many of you are connected and do not feel alone when you are at work? Why is this and how have you achieved this at your workplace?

  • Connectedness is one of the basic primal needs every person seeks

  • Being connected means being physically, mentally, and emotionally close to those around us - it comes from being considered part of a group or “tribe”

  • By nature, humans are social and emotional beings, and close connections with other people release oxytocin into the brain - the feel good hormone!

  • It makes sense then that when employees feel connected to each other, their work, the organization, and the company’s culture can increase employee satisfaction and engagement, improve the customer experience, reduce turnover, and boost productivity

  • This is a win-win and yet the stat show that this is not always the case - 45% of employees in the U.S. still think that their company is not doing enough and are not investing in employee connection

  • If your goal is to increase employee connection in your workplace, here are a few things you could try or ask management to implement:

    • Have leaders lead by example

    • Develop stronger leaders

    • Encourage Collaboration

    • Provide meaningful recognition

    • Make it east to celebrate

    • Prioritize work-life balance

    • Be consistent

    • Be intentional about connecting with remote employees
