Get off the Hamster Wheel!
“You are not your mind.”
~Eckhart Tolle
What is Clarity?
Merriam-Webster defines clarity as ‘the quality or state of being clear’. So in other words when we have clarity we have:
o A clear sense of who we are
o We are in control
o We are in the driver’s seat
o We know where we are going
o We can picture our future self
o We have a roadmap
o We have a blueprint of where you want to end up
o Our internal compass is on track
o Clarity is essential to our lives
o Clarity is empowering
o We understand and have an awareness of ourselves
o We see things as they are not how we think or imagine they should be
So a lack of clarity can feel like:
o An unsettled mind
o Being and feeling distracted
o Feeling confused and all over the map
o Losing sight of who you are
o Not knowing where you are going in life
o Feeling trapped or in the fog
o You feel like you may make wrong decisions
o Living life without real purpose
We all know that life is complicated and we are all dealing with an enormous amount of internal and external noise - so getting "clarity" for most people may feel pretty challenging asking ourselves questions like what even is clarity? How do you get it? And why should it matter?
Well - from a motivation standpoint, it's challenging to be motivated unless you're clear on where you want to go and clear on how you'll get there - and from a hope perspective, it's challenging unless you can see the future you want and believe there is a path to getting you there.
So a key aspect of clarity, then, is ultimately deciding what you want - then deciding:
how you're going to get it
what in your life needs changing
where you need to place your focus
Sounds simple hey? Well for many of us who are trapped in a loop it can be hard to jump off the hamster wheel of our mind.
I am a HUGE fan of the effectiveness of journaling and science backs this up - including igniting areas of our brains to process information easier, help to make new connections and insights, strengthens our memory, writing by hand forces us to slow down to be more present, engages our senses and quiets our monkey mind.
Here are a few prompts you can start using today:
What's the truth for me in this situation?
What is the most important idea to ponder today?
What do I need to know?
What do I need to understand?
How can I change my perspective?
What does success look like for me?
What's my best next move that will support my growth?
Who do I ultimately want to become?
What does my dream workday look like? Could I make that every day?
What do I fear being asked?
Am I giving all areas of my life appropriate energy?
What does future me need right now?
When you lack clarity and feel unsettled, distracted and confused you can feel shut down. If this is you then I would love to talk to you and hear about where you are at in your life and career journey - what your incredible story is - because believe me....it is incredible! DM and we can set a time to talk. No charge!
